Former area prep athletes

In the coming weeks, we are going to try and update how former area high school athletes are doing on the collegiate level.

Today, we will start with former Gadsden girls basketball player Ana Valtierra, who is playing a major role for Texas-El Paso's 21-6 women's basketball team. Valtierra owns the school record for games played (114) and minutes played (3,507). She second in school history with 313 assists and 169 steals.

Not bad for a kid not recruited by anyone out of high school, including UTEP. She recruited UTEP and landed a spot on the team.

Hopefully, Valtierra will get a chance to play in the NCAA or WNIT this year, a fitting end to a very good basketball career, which included a couple of trips to postseason play as a prep star.

If you readers out there have any suggestions for updates, feel free to email myself or Jason Groves.
